Visit our new blog and website for Tobin Trends, the latest information we have gathered in the Haynesville, Eagle Ford, and Barnett Shale Plays.

 P2 Tobin Trends

In weekly posts in Tobin Trends, we'll give you a look into the lease activity and well data that P2 Energy Solutions collects on a regular basis.

Our latest post involves well data for the Eagle Ford shale play, well data for the Barnett shale play, and well data for the Haynesville shale play.

Here is a look at the last year of well permitting and completion activity for the Eagle Ford shale. You can see a spike in permits in January of 2010, and a downward trend of completions.

Note: a completed well doesn't necessarily mean a producing well.

Mapping the Marcellus Shale Play

Posted by Rob Walter on Thu, Dec 10, 2009

There was an anniversary in October that most people in the E&P industry probably didn't know about. It was five years ago on October 4th that natural gas flowed from a test well in Pennsylvania. Range Resources proved you could get gas from the Marcellus Shale.

Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale

Three years later, Range had its first successul horizontal well in the Marcellus. Today, it has leased more than 350,000 acres. Range isn't alone in the Marcellus; Chesapeake, Newfield Exploration, Hess Corporation, Cabot Oil and Gas, EOG Resources, Atlas Energy and CNX Gas are also staking claims.

In the Fall 2009 Tobin Quarterly newsletter, we take a look at how you can use P2 Energy Solutions' software and map data to map your leases and strategy in the Marcellus.

We use Tobin Map Data, Tobin Enterprise Land, Tobin GIS Studio, and First American Spatial Solutions' ParcelPoint parcel ownership database to take your leases from paper, to the map.

"Miracle on the Hudson" at the P2 Energy Solutions User Conference

Posted by Rob Walter on Fri, Nov 06, 2009

If you weren't able to attend the 2009 P2 Energy Solutions User Conference in Orlando, we wanted to share one of the unique experiences we had.

Dave Sanderson was the last person out of the plane that crashed in the Hudson River in January of this year. He works with one of our software partners, Oracle, and was traveling for that job when the crash happened.

Dave Sanderson

Dave shared his amazing story with us during our opening keynote address. It was awe-inspiring to hear how he helped get everyone safely off the plane and out onto the wing, where they were quickly rescued.

It was equally amazing to hear how quickly the events transpired. Dave walked us through those first 20 minutes, from when the plane crashed to when he found himself in a hospital bed in New Jersey.

Dave and the other survivors of the flight are releasing a book in January, detailing how their lives have changed because of the crash. From what we heard in Orlando, it promises to be quite a read.

Dave recently mentioned his experience at our conference on his blog. If you were at the conference, we encourage you to head there and leave him a comment about what you thought.

Rocket Software Purchases UniData

Posted by Rob Walter on Wed, Oct 14, 2009

Rocket Software has purchased the UniData product line from IBM. P2 Energy Solutions is excited about the change in ownership and the long term benefit it will provide to Excalibur clients through expanded functionality in the UniData database.

According to Andy Youniss, President and CEO of Rocket Software, "We are excited to explore bringing you new features, functions, and products from our vast intellectual property portfolio. We do not have any formal announcements to make at this time, but it is easy to get excited about Rocket business intelligence, performance management, database tools, legacy modernization, and terminal emulation technologies (to name a few) and U2."

UniData and Rocket: A Strategic Fit

Bob Dedecker, P2 Energy Solutions Sr. Director of Application Systems for Excalibur, attended a summit regarding the purchase, and is excited that Rocket Software will be announcing enhancement delivery timelines as early as November. One item they are trying to target for announcement is increased availability and support for integration with MS SQL Server. UniData is a very nice strategic fit for Rocket Software and Rocket specifically targeted UniData for acquisition to fill a need in their portfolio, which did not contain a database engine. Rocket offers many solutions, such as BI tools and User Interface technologies, that rely on database systems. There are many synergies between Rocket and UniData. In past acquisitions, Rocket Software has invested considerably in the acquired products and delivered significantly increased product features and functionality.

"We've built a world-class platform"

"Rocket has made over 25 acquisitions over the course of our life. Rocket has never "killed" anything we've acquired. We acquire businesses that we can help grow, which in turn helps Rocket grow. Like anything else in life, some of our acquisitions have been more successful than others. We are no different than you and your business in this regard; not everything we do is wildly successful. But we think we've built a world-class platform that can identify, acquire, and integrate businesses and provide them with an environment that gives them a great chance to succeed. I don't think you can ask for more than that," stated Youniss.

Purchase Means Investment for Growth

The entire U2 Team within IBM, over 100 people, will be moving to Rocket Software and Rocket Software intends to let this unit operate independently. This will ensure very little disruption in processing, contacts, etc. Susie Siegesmund, formerly IBM's Director of U2 Data Servers and Tools and the highest-ranking IBMer to move to Rocket Software, says the sale will allow the new owner to invest for growth. In the short term, the products will continue on their current release schedules.

"We expect very minor changes to currently published schedules, mostly due to the transition of all our development systems to a new network," Siegesmund comments. "In the future, customers can expect more investment in development, resulting in more frequent releases."

If you have any questions about Excalibur and Rocket Software's purchase of UniData, please send us an email at info(at)p2es.com, or call our sales department at 800-662-9144.

About Rocket Software
Rocket Software was founded in 1990 with an initial focus on developing and delivering software solutions to IBM mainframe customers. Since that time, Rocket has greatly expanded its software OEM business to cover a wide spectrum of enterprise infrastructure products in the areas of Business Intelligence, Storage, Networks, Terminal Emulation, Integration, Security, and Database. Rocket has licensed its products to a number of major OEMs and is engaged in business and technology partnerships with IBM, EMC/RSA, HP/EDS, Nortel, Motorola, and many others.

In parallel with a significant R&D investment in developing software products, Rocket Software began a series of strategic acquisitions in 2000. As a result, Rocket now has well over 100 software products that are licensed both through OEM partners and VARs/resellers, and via direct sales through Rocket's acquired branded sales channels, such as Areotext, ARKIVIO, BlueZone, CorVu, LegaSuite, Mainstar, Seagull, Servergraph, SmartDB, and U2.

We endeavor to keep the teams intact and entrust them to manage and expand the product lines that they initially created. This philosophy has allowed Rocket to grow to more than 700 employees around the world, including Eastern and Western Europe, Australia, Asia and North America.

Eagle Ford Shale: Where the Wells Are

Posted by Rob Walter on Tue, Oct 06, 2009

The Eagle Ford Shale is getting more attention. The Houston Chronicle is calling the Eagle Ford Shale a "mammoth discovery," and "the hottest prospect energy companies have seen in some time."

Chronicle reporter Brett Clanton writes that companies believe the Eagle Ford has "a virtually recession-proof combination of highly productive wells and low drilling costs," that can bring profits even when natural gas prices are as low as they are.

P2 Energy Solutions' Tobin Map Data has released well activity figures that show a steady rise in drilling activity in the Eagle Ford since January; this, at the same time that most companies have been pulling back or halting their drilling activities.

We also have statistics showing the Eagle Ford Shale drilling activity by month and by county on our website.

P2 Energy Solutions' Tobin Map Data is the industry-accepted standard in map data for the digital oilfield. We have several data products in the Eagle Ford to help you shape your strategy. Find out more by contacting us here.

Haynesville Shale Area: Where the new wells are

Posted by Rob Walter on Thu, Oct 01, 2009

Despite a down year for the energy industry and low natural gas prices, companies are still drilling in active shale play areas such as the Haynesville shale area. P2 Energy Solutions' Tobin Map Data now reveals new permits and completion numbers for the Haynesville-Cotton Valley-Bossier shale areas.

Taking a look at permits and completions from January to August, there's a spike in June, but a fall-off to August in the Haynesville shale play. The August numbers are likely artifically low because not all the reporting has finished for that cycle.

Oil and Gas Lease Activity in the Eagle Ford Shale Play

Eagle Ford Shale Play Map

The Eagle Ford Shale Play has been gaining attention over the last six months due to gas, gas/condensate and oil discoveries with good producing rates. It isn't uncommon to hear "Haynesville" uttered in the same breath, and that has many companies excited.

P2 Energy Solutions has seen an increase in interest in the area, and that's why this month's Tobin Monthly takes a look at where the lease activity is surrounding this emerging - yet old - South Texas shale play.

Read more about the Eagle Ford Shale play here.

Take a look at the major players in the Eagle Ford shale play here.

We also have a map showing the lease activity for the counties of the Eagle Ford shale play here.

We can also make custom GIS maps for the Eagle Ford, displaying competitor lease and well spot information.
